This is home ground for us. NaavFresh started in Kamothe and it is where our roots are. We know Sector 21 the way you know your own kitchen — the morning bazaar, the regulars who would stop at the fish stall, the families who would ask the vendor to save a specific piece. We have been part of this neighbourhood long enough to understand what people here want. They want the real thing. Kamothe has a mix of older families who grew up eating Malvani-style surmai and newer residents who moved here from other parts of Maharashtra and beyond. Both communities share one thing: they know good fish.

The challenge we always saw was this — by the time fish reached the morning market in Kamothe, it had already lost that first-day brilliance. The gills were darkening slightly. The flesh had softened just a bit. Nothing you would throw away — but not what it could have been if you had gotten it six hours earlier. We decided the only way to fix this was to go to the source ourselves. Every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday we are at the dock auction before most of the city is awake. We buy what looks best that morning. We clean it, cut it to order, and we pack it cold. By the time you open your door in Sector 19 or Sector 35, that fish is as close to the sea as you can get without being on a boat.

We also understand the Kamothe household. You are not always ordering one kilo of one fish. Sometimes it is 500 grams of surmai steak for two people, a handful of prawns for a quick stir fry, maybe a pomfret for the weekend.
